Beowulf

This is a reprint of Beowulf without translation, commentary or introduction.

The Beowulf Manuscript

The only surviving copy of the Beowulf poem from the Middle Ages, contained within the Nowell Codex, was written by monks around 1000 AD yet was most likely part of a long, oral tradition that could predate this by hundreds of years.

The manuscript survived a fire at Ashburnham House in 1731, and, since 1764 linguists have worked tirelessly to reconstruct its damaged parts and bring the story back to life.

Thanks to their efforts, the Beowulf epic was translated hundreds of times into dozens of languages.

The Beowulf Story

For twelve years, Grendel struck fear into the hearts of men, relentlessly attacking the famed hall of Heorot in the dead of night. When young Beowulf of heard the tale he set to sea, sailing to Denmark in search of honour and glory in battle.

How, then, did young Beowulf fare against his foe and what else awaited him on his journey?
